Great Louvre experience with an audio guide!

It was great to see Da Vinci’s artwork in person. The host led us directly to the spot where Mona Lisa is on display. I must say her smile is really intriguing. Afterwards, an audio guide led me through the Louvre’s most famous works smoothly, making it feel like I had a personal art historian in my ear. Also, the convenience of moving at my own pace while still learning so much was perfect. I can highly recommend this!

It was nice meeting you, Mona Lisa!

I had a fantastic experience with the Mona Lisa tickets at the Louvre! Our host greeted us right outside the museum and provided all the information we needed in English, making the process easier. Once inside, the audio guide was helpful and discrete. It guided us through the museum’s highlights, offering details on each exhibit. I was shocked at how small the painting of the Mona Lisa is in real life. However, this does not reduce its beauty and how the painting was made. I had no idea that it was made on a poplar wood panel. How amazing! I definitely recommend you go and check it out for yourself!

SEE MONA LISA UP CLOSE & PERSONAL!

The piece of artwork everyone is heading to see first upon their arrival at the Louvre is the Mona Lisa. Knowing the power it holds on society today, it is shocking that up until the beginning of the 20th century, the Mona Lisa was relatively unknown outside the art world. Its rise to fame occurred in 1911 when the Louvre employee Vincenzo Perrugia stole the portrait to bring it back to his home country of Italy, where he believed it belonged. He kept the painting hidden in his apartment for two years before presenting it in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, where it was for only two weeks before returning to the Louvre. It wasn’t gone for very long, but that was enough time for this previously looked-over painting to be thrust into the spotlight. This oil painting by Leonardo Da Vinci is believed to be Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a silk merchant, who sits at the center with her arms folded as she gazes at the viewer with a soft smile. A smile whose unclear nature has made this iconic painting even more enigmatic, drawing the viewers to try to understand the intentions of da Vinci and his muse.

Interesting facts about Mona Lisa

EYEBROWS OF THE MONA LISA ARE A TOPIC OF DEBATE

There were claims that the Mona Lisa did not have eyebrows because members of the upper class at that time fashionably hid or removed eyebrows. Others, on the other hand, claimed that the absence of an eyebrow was proof that it was an unfinished masterpiece. However, a detailed digital scan of the painting in 2007 revealed that da Vinci had painted Mona Lisa's eyebrows and eyelashes. Still, they had faded over time and had been a victim of repairs over the centuries.

THE MONA LISA HAS BROKEN MANY HEARTS

When the portrait was first exhibited in public at the Louvre in 1815, it mesmerized the crowds of men who brought flowers to the painting and wrote poems and passionate letters to her. Mona Lisa even has her own e-mail inbox containing numerous love letters, which she still receives today.

THE PAINTING IS SET IN PRISON

The Mona Lisa has its own room in the Louvre, where the temperature is constantly monitored to ensure ideal conditions at all times and protect the artwork. Changes in temperature and humidity can damage the picture, such as paint cracking, canvas drying, or deformations. The image is placed behind bulletproof glass to prevent theft.

THE MONA LISA WAS ATTACKED?

If you take a closer look at the left elbow of the Mona Lisa, you will notice the damage that the Bolivian Ugo Ungaza did in 1956 when he threw a stone at the painting. A few months earlier, another attacker threw acid at the painting and hit the lower part of the painting. These attacks put the Mona Lisa behind bulletproof glass, which proved effective when, in 2009, an angry Russian tourist who had been denied French citizenship threw a cup at the painting.

THE MONA LISA’S RETURN TO LOUVRE STARTED A FASHION TREND

The women began to apply yellow powder to their faces and necks, imitating the golden complexion of the Mona Lisa, and minimally moved their facial muscles to mimic her smile. In Parisian cabaret, dancers dressed as La Joconde (the Italian name for the Mona Lisa) danced the cheeky can-can dance. The Mona Lisa left the Louvre as a work of art and returned as a public good and the first mass art icon.
