I highly recommend visiting the Louvre! We wanted to have as much time as possible in the museum and this ticket gave us just that. The Louvre Museum has been on my bucket list for a looong time. I wanted to visit it last time I was in Paris but I didn’t manage to buy a ticket since they sell out fast. So, buying this ticket and seeing the Mona Lisa in front of me was a dream come true! It was hard to believe the painting was actually in front of me. The ticket allowed us to stay at the museum for as long as we wanted, so we stayed for about 4 hours, but the time flew by. I loved seeing the French Crown Jewels and the Egyptian mummies, it’s crazy how old some of the works are.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE LOUVRE
The Louvre first opened in 1793 with 537 paintings on display. It was briefly closed in 1796, but it reopened in 1801 as Musée Napoléon, featuring a much larger collection of art. Today, the Louvre houses over 35,000 works of art spread across eight departments: Egyptian Antiquities, Near Eastern Antiquities, Greek, Etruscan, and Roman Antiquities, Islamic Art, Sculpture, Decorative Arts, Paintings, and Prints and Drawings.

The Louvre is home to many masterpieces displayed across several floors and galleries. The ground floor houses the more than 2,000-year-old Venus de Milo, an iconic Greek statue representing Aphrodite. At the top of the Daru staircase, you can see the Winged Victory of Samothrace, a Greek sculpture from 200 BC standing on a grand staircase, and Michelangelo’s unfinished sculpture titled The Dying Slave. Also on the first floor are the largest French paintings, including David’s The Coronation of Napoleon. Géricault’s The Raft of the Medusa can be found in the Red Rooms. As you continue walking across the lower floors of the museum, you’ll step into Ancient Egypt and discover a collection of over 50,000 artifacts, including mummies, statues, and gold jewelry. You’ll also get to see the Assyrian Winged Bulls, colossal statues known as Lamassu, which used to guard the entrances of royal palaces. On the first floor, you can explore a collection of French crown jewels, including scepters, crowns, and other treasures. You’ll also discover the beauty of Islamic art through unique ceramics, textiles, and calligraphy spanning over 1,300 years and showcasing pieces from the Middle East, North Africa, and Spain.

Unlike Caravaggio or Picasso who would both paint hundreds if not thousands of paintings, da Vinci has left the world only 24 known free-standing pieces of art. Two of those are frescoes on a wall, such as the Last Supper in Milan. The 22 remaining pieces are either solo works or collaborations with students or friends like Verrocchio.
Six of the 24 paintings, or 25% of all da Vinci’s paintings, are located in the Louvre.
